Addy felt like her eyes were going to pop out of her head when she saw the famous windmill perched atop the famous cabaret. She truly did hope that Zeldaâs friend Marguerite was okay, but she couldnât bring herself to regret this amazing historical tour she was on. In spite of her efforts to keep her cool, Zelda giggled when Addy let out an audible squeal at the sight of the building.
Zelda advised the driver to wait for them again and smiled at Addy. âI suppose by your reaction that youâve not been here before.â
Shaking her head, Addy replied in barely a whisper. âIâve only read about it.â She knew she sounded like a naive tourist, but she was too overwhelmed to care.
Another giggle from Zelda. âWell, letâs not delay, then. Close your mouth and follow me inside. You are really gonna lose your marbles when you see the inside.â
Zelda looped her arm through Addyâs and led her inside.
Nobody seemed to care that they were there. Zelda wound them through the auditorium and through the side door that took them backstage without so much as a word of unwelcome from the theaterâs staff. The energy back stage was like nothing Addy had experienced before. Actresses and actors milled about, most not in costume or makeup, but some had begun the process of changing.
Zelda stopped in front of a young brunette woman. âIâm lookinâ for Marguerite. Itâs urgent. Have you seen her?â
âI havenât, but her dressing room is that way. She usually keeps to herself in the hours before we go on.â
âThank you,â Zelda said and then plodded down the dark, bustling hallway in the direction the woman had indicated.
As they passed through the dark hallway getting deeper into the bowels of the theater, Addy heard a manâs voice yelling.
âWhat do you mean you donât know where she is? Sheâs the lead actress. Find her.â
Zelda and Addy exchanged looks. Once again, Addy was grateful that most people theyâd encountered today defaulted to English.
âI guess sheâs not here either,â Zelda frowned. They kept walking but their steps slowed.
More bellows from the man. âWhereâs Mia? If Marguerite doesnât show, her understudy better be ready to step up. I need to see her immediately.â
âYes sir,â a small female voice squeaked back.
âWell, what are you waiting for?â the man shrieked and then there was a tiny woman with short black hair half-running down the hallway away from the blustering manâs voice that followed her.
Zelda pointed to a door with Margueriteâs name written on it. âI see Margueriteâs dressinâ roomâ¦just there. Follow me. Maybe we can learn somethinâ in there.â
They opened the unlocked door and quickly moved inside, closing it softly behind them.
A woman sat in front of a lighted vanity. She was doing her makeup and seemed to already be in full costume.
She turned at the sound of their entrance.
âWhat are you doing in here?â She spoke English, which surprised Addy, but with a heavy French accent.
Zeldaâs eyebrow arched in question. âI might ask you the same thing.
